Great job on the web site. My father A.A. Lidman (Pudgy) served on the
Sea Robin SS 407. He went to the Fairbanks Morris factory for
schooling on the engines that were installed on the Sea Robin. He was
on all three war patrols and the trip around Cape Horn. He just
celibrated his 84th birthday on 12-8-01. While at my house I showed
him the web site. He also enjoied the web site. Thank you for setting
up this site.

Very nice site! You will find a link to it on my page under the Diesel
boats section.
I am currently working at BUPERS in the submarine officer detailer
office and I am under orders to report to my second sub in March 2002.
I will be reporting to USS CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI (SSN 705).

Michelle Willison

My father, John Willison served aboard this submarine. On August
12,2001 he passed away. The time my father served in the Navy was so
very special to him. It was really only upon his death that I realized
this. My father requested his final resting place be the sea. The
sailor has come home. I love you daddy.

Paul Web gets more interesting every year. As you know I served on
the SEA ROBIN 1944-&- 45. Served in the forward torpedo room with Madden,
Stumpy and [snake] Harrington. Will keep signing on often

To Sea Robin crew and family,

I have only been in the Navy for approximately a year and a
half. Though I am not yet qualified as a submariner, it is people like
those who served on SS-407, and all the crews of the 52 boats that went
down in WWII, that make me proud to be a contributing part in today's
Navy. I have met several veterans including those who served on the
Wahoo, the Trepang, the Scorpion, and the Thresher. All have shared
stories with me of the relentless ordeals they dealt with in World War
II. Each story with a new terrifying and bold twist of honor, courage
and committment; while maintaining the respect to prior servicemen and
those to come. I want to say thank you for fighting so bravely and may
the silent service live in all our hearts until the end of time. God
bless each of you and once again, thank you for blessing me with the
respect and genuine compassion I have for my duty a sailor.

ex - LSRM2 (radioman)Royal Canadian Navy. I spend many hours surfing
DBF sites (and the Ns when time permits). Really enjoy my visit to
your site. Even found a few names that I may remember.

I served 5 years on HMCS RAINBOW SS 75. She was a great boat with a
great history as the Argonaut SS 475. Of course we made a little
history as well.

Thanks for the site and if anyone wants to email me I welcome thier
comments.

If the 475 has a website please advise me of the location.

Came aboard the ROBIN in the late 1950s fresh out of Sub Schl. COATES
was the yeoman and I was his striker. Qualified and made YN2 before I
left to be a staff yeoman on COMSUBRON EIGHT. John Lindsay was the
skipper and "Swede" Hanson was the exec. Whitey Mack (of Blind Man's
Bluff fame) was one of the jr officers. Made a trip to St. Thomas and
the Med while on her. I still have a copy of one of the sailing lists
which I look at periodically. Would be happy to share one if anybody
out there would like one. I can be e-mailed at Sub407@aol.com.

Just discovered your page while doing additional research on Sea
Robin. I am presently building a 1/48 scale operational model of her

I am an active duty submariner stationed aboard USS Seawolf SSN-21. For
ten years I have ben collecting original submarine patches. I have two
original USS Sea Robin patches one being obtained on a 1963 tiger
cruise by a Mr. Paul E Schuman. I wanted to know if anyone who was
stationed aboard USS Sea Robin and other boats had duplicates of a
patch from a different boat they would like to trade for a Sea Robin
original. If anyone is interested please Email for a scan of this patch
or any of my other 200 original boat patches...Thanks for your time...

I can remember touring the Sea Robin at the Groton, CT Navy Base in the early 1960's. The occasion was a Cub Scouts field trip. It was pouring rain, and our tour ended when we emerged from a hatch near the fantail. I can still remember how scared I was while groping my way around the conning tower while heading back toward the gang plank at the bow. Great website!

I must say that after viewing your web site it makes me think that I may have missed out on one of the greatest traditions in the United States Navy. While serving from 1989 - 1997 my sea counter never reached Day 1 and I always felt blessed. Now I know that the comraderie and the bond that forms between shipmates, even those who never physically served side by side on the Sea Robin, far outweighs any positives of being a "land-locked" seaman. Very nice site Uncle Paul. Very nice.

Great job on the site Paul, I had gotten your letter the other day asking me if i was a crew member on the Sea Robin. I sure was, i still tell the old sea stories to my friends and family. My sons love them. I had a great time while aboard. I was aboard her sometime in 1966 to the end of 1967. I remember Roundtree and Capt. McCune. I was on that N.Europe and Springboard trip. Had a great time. I was pals with Tom Leopold and i noticed he was on the list with no city. All i remember is that he was from Yo ngstown,Ohio if you want to find him. I also remember Fred Flowers , the cook, he was a great guy and helped me alot. I'll have to go thru my pictures and see who else i remember. Again Paul , its a great web site , keep up the great work. Also, just to l t you know, after i left the Sea Robin i went to Nuclear Weapons school in San Diego and then was stationed on the USS Haddock SSN621. Take care for now. Very nice web site, well done. The 407 was the first boat I rode. A training daily op out of sub school in October of 1963. The first dive that day was the worst, the other 15 were tame. Duty chief miscalculated trim and put an extra 20,000 lbs in forward trim. (yes, I remember !)Down angle put bow in mud of Long Island sound with screws almost out of water. I was on dive planes and at full rise, I did not know it was not a normal dive, as it was dive number one for me. Great start of 8 years of sub duty o USS Sea Devil AGSS-400, USS Volador SS-490 and USS Sculpin SSN-590. Good job on research of all crew members, maybe a crew member on the day will remember that "blow all the tanks, NOW!" dive. Congratulations on your work.

I was only on the Robin during my last 2 months in Navy (July-Sept 1969) for her battery job, after I got off Sailfish(SS-572)which was leaving NLON for West-Pac. But, what I remember most about the Robin was her speed. When I crewed the Croaker(SS-246) and the Becuna(SS-319) we operated often with the Robin, and upon returning to NLON (rounding Race Point or Montauk) ...well you know the story... "Let the races begin." It seems like every time, the Robin would light up all four of those FM engines, teas us by starting about 2,000 yds. off our stern, and then end up blowing our doors off by the time we reached the Thames. For you Robin crews that didn't know it at the time (it can be revealed only now), on the Becuna we were baited by the CO with an ext a liberty day if we could beat you back to the pier! As an IC forward and Port Controllerman, I remember orders coming down from the bridge "balls to the wall." Thus, we had all four GM's screaming, and the dust was burning off the manuevering room cubi le bus-bars (all ahead flank in parallel). Plus the obligatory desperation of..."light-off the low-pressure blower", "blow s--t tanks", "the mess cook", blow everything!!! If my memory serves me well, I think we blew an engine cylinder once and didn't ev n back-off the throttle. Needless to say...we never got that extra liberty day. Fond memories. I like to view it to see who has made comments as well s to see what they say. In order to just view it, I select "I'm done" after I click on the log and this puts a blank comment in the book and takes up worthless space. Just a suggestion. Again, nice work.

Paul, That opening shot of the Sea Robin is one great pic. Wish I had one like that of the Blenny. What's really neat is that it shows those dual 5 inchers and dual 40mm's. Very few pics show the complete armament that we put to pretty good use during the last ouple of runs before it was all over. You mentioned getting hold of old crew members...did you try Griffin's page that shows reunions and also a listing for finding crew members. I posted the name of one of my best buddies on the Blenny that I had been searching out for years. A guy in Florida said he had found him....which he had. Only problem was that my buddy had died 5 months prior. I did get to call and talk with his widow. She said that her husband had often mentioned me and that he always wondered where I as. Sad ending, but the notice DID WORK! I had it bookmarked and just checked to send the URL. Apparently some way I've deleted it...ugh! Am sure you can find it by searching under "Reunions" or some such thing, as that's the way I located it. Anyway, you have a great site. Frank

I'm interested in getting any photos of the Robin on disc.I have a side business and can put things on mugs, plates, T-shirts etc. Some of the photo's download OK but alot do not. When I got disch rged in 66' from Portsmouth Shipyard, someone stole alot of my stuff when I turned in my bedding at the sub barracks and I lost most of the memorabelia I had. Ended up a Chief BoatswainsMate before they commissioned me.Ah yes,the fates of men.On the Watts DD-567 our skipper was CDR Holden who was a submariner all through WWII.A truly great Captain. A SUPER tribute to a fine old ship. I was priveleged to ride SEA ROBIN as a school boat several times in 1955 while attending the 100th Officers' Class at SubSchool. The skipper then was a lobster-eating maniac, and lookouts were always alert for lonely lobster pots. Sometimes after "raiding" a lobster pot, a dozen cans of canned hamburgers would be left in the pot in exchange for an crustacheons removed from it (the Navy then had a 50 supply of canned hamburgers, and all commissarry officers were being pushed to get rid of the surplus by all means available!) Suggestion (NOT a criticism) - in the area where you list the ship's vital statistics (dimensions, displacements, etc.) spell out the words rather than use abbreviations. You and I recognize the abbreviation for "displacement", but a visiting civilian p obably will not. If Ron Martini does not give you his award for super new sites, then it will be a miscarriage of justice. You have done a marvelous job - obviously, a labor of love. Great job Paul, Kind of makes me boatsick!!! It looks like the submerged speed is off though..If I am reading that right..On a series battery run you should be within a couple of knots of surface speed..at least for 1/2 hour rate...

Good boat-good web page-was service man of the month in 1967 or 68, can't remember. Anything that didn't move got polished under Capt. Kolaris, including the capstains. Changed squadrons from 8 to 2 during my stay. The wives developed and printed the 8 Ball Express paper, all about squadron activities. Particularly remember LCDR Joe Blair, who I taught to navigate, and LCDR Russ Waterman. Sea Robin was a good ship, clean ship, quality crew and I was priveledged to have served on her. Of note we had a LT (jg) by the name of Mike Ralston, who was Mike on the Mickey Mouse show.

Paul: Your work is terrific! Thanks for including a picture of yourself! And thanks for including the URL in the "correction". Need any verbage on the Northern European tour in 1967 - or did you make it? Again, I am VERY PROUD. Many thanks. Denver Captain Joe D. McCune, USN (Ret.) CO June '66-May '68.
